I am definitely excited for winter break, but there is something pretty exciting going on this up coming week in school…
In our school, starting in 3rd grade, every grade has a “job” for the school. The 3rd grade is the post office; they have mail boxes placed around the school from which they collect letters, attendance cards, books or anything else that needs to be delivered around the school. The 4th graders run the school store. They sell all kinds of supplies including tape, notebooks, folders, pencils and markers. The 5th grade makes picture and word signs that are hung on all rooms of the school. In my opinion, the 6th graders have the most fun job. They study the Renaissance, the time when mass productive printing was coming into use. In their room, they have two very old, yet functioning Chandler Price treadle presses. They print attendance cards which the whole school uses, beautiful personalized business cards and stationary, and images which they design themselves using linoleum blocks. The 7th grade (that’s me!) take care of the kids who are in their last year of Pre-k. We take turns assisting the teachers by acting as another teacher. We supervise the kids during classes, and we take them downstairs to their care-takers every day. And finally, the 8th graders write the school newspaper.
As I was saying, our class has a very exciting week ahead. Traditionally, the 7th grade has put on a play in the fall for the kids that we take care of. On Friday, this play is taking place.
My character is named CopyCat. He plays a fairly minor role in the story, yet he is a funny character. Our homework this weekend was to make our character’s costume:
Here’s his face:
